Beijing Automotive Excluded From Opel Bid, Leaving RHJ, Magna
Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. has been excluded from bidding for General Motors Co.’s Opel unit in Europe after the U.S. carmaker and the German government put their weight behind the two other suitors.
Following talks in Berlin yesterday, GM negotiators and aides from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government d to drop BAIC from the race to buy an Opel stake, according to GM and the government. That leaves Canadian car-parts maker Magna International Inc. and Belgian investment company RHJ International SA.
“We have d to continue detailed talks with both Magna and RHJI to secure Opel’s future,” John Smith, GM’s chief negotiator for the sale of Opel, said in a statement today. Beatrix Brodkorb, a spokeswoman for the Berlin-based Economy Ministry, confirmed BAIC’s exclusion today in an interview.
BAIC’s ouster pits the German government GM as they vaunt competing support for the remaining bidders. Merkel’s coalition prefers Magna’s bid after a “thorough analysis” of final offers received July 20, said Ulrich Wilhelm, the chief government spokesman, yesterday.
Brodkorb didn’t say why BAIC was rejected. The Chinese carmaker offered 660 million euros ($938.6 million) for a 51 percent stake in Opel, leaving GM with 49 percent. BAIC’s offer calls for 2.64 billion euros in government loan guarantees.
