A strong quake struck at sea off the central Philippines on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, seismologists said.
* G' d9 z% H/ vThe U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at 6.0, while the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) put it at 6.1. ) @' c( i7 f1 X! ^. z! J, C
It struck in the South China Sea off the west coast of Mindoro island at 2:23 p.m. local  (0623 GMT).
6 h/ J. b" w4 E _: VLocal seismologist Ismael Narag said the quake generated enough potential power to unleash big waves, but added that the authorities did not think it was capable of triggering a tsunami so Phivolcs issued no warning.

The earth's disturbance occurred about 50.1 kilometers (31.1 miles) beneath the surface, according to a U.S. Geological Survey advisory.
